This project considers the complex question of the garbage and its role in our society.
The garbage seen by the population as a taboo and removed from the cities because constitutes a threat for their image.
The garbage seen as an ignored element of the society and located in residual areas of the territory of which are needed to loose the trace.
The garbage seen as discards of human activities.
The garbage seen as a dangerous element for the environment participates to the process of climatic change.
The project wants to go against these tendencies, creating a centre of collecting, transformation and reuse, in harmony with the territory; a centre that represent an attraction pole for the population that for the first time won’t see the refusals as a thing to forget but as a fundamental element of its life, a moment of leisure, a centre to be visited to understand its reality and to enjoy the technological phenomena that represents.
To do this, the projectual approach has started from a detailed analysis of the territory and from its implication with the city of Verona. Our intention wasn’t to conceive the centre as an additional element of the anonymous industrial architecture of Verona, that’s why we developed a system to integrate the complex in the territory, considering the geographical characteristics and the proximity to the city.
To mark the presence of Verona in the project we took as a reference the polygonal and inclined forms of the old Austrian bunkers that surround the city. We contained in it a fragment of the urban structure of Verona, using the cardo and the decumano to compose the plant and exploiting their aces to sew the project to the existing territory and to create some connections among areas that until this moment where separated. It’s like if a fragment of the ancient Verona was suddenly escaped from the control of the urban structure and landed in the periphery, closed to the Adige river, replacing the reticular distribution of the fields with the net of the ancient Roman layout.
All the other interventions in the project are fit to open the centre to the public, allowing the population to penetrate in some areas to live the experience of garbage treatment and the recycling process. We conceived the project as a unique element in the territory that integrates the suburbs of Verona and participates to the growth of the city.
Architecture in this case is the result, the derivation of a thought and an actuation process on the territory, composed by the interaction between the technological functions of the industrial complex and its role in the society. It isn’t the imposition of a specific form but the result of an intention.
